How do I know if my pool is safe to swim?

If not properly maintained, the water in your domestic swimming pool harbours a range of microbes, including bacteria and algae, which can cause health problems such as ear, nose and throat infections.

You should check your swimming pool regularly to make sure the water is healthy. A simple way to do this is to take a daily look into the pool. And ask the following questions; Is the water clear? Can I see to the bottom of the pool? Does the water look any different to how it looked the day before? If any changes, such as cloudiness, means that you need to test the water and take steps to improve water quality before anyone goes swimming.

How long should I filter the water?

Filtration of the water is very important and should be done daily.  In winter it should run between 2-4 hours (2 hours is sufficient if you apply a winter pack).  In summer it should run a minimum of 8 hours and 10-12 hours if used daily and it’s hot.

How often should I have my water tested?

For beginners, it’s advisable to have the water tested at least once every two weeks until you get use to your pool.  However, for people who are more in tune with their pool once per month should be sufficient, subject to the water being clear, algae free, no lose of water or toping up.  Please note that chemicals are lost when water is diluted. For example; topping up, rain etc.
